Design Challenge

UXNow is back and this year‘s theme is  ‘Design for India’. Needless to mention, this theme has gravity not only because it entwines us but also because it was the passion of Late Prof. M P Ranjan.

The famous blog, “Design For India” penned by him speaks volumes of his inclination for handicrafts & beauty of things labeled ‘Handmade in India’. UXNow 2015, takes this opportunity to dedicate its design challenges to this polymath whose contribution to the design fraternity is immeasurable.

Let us follow the path he showed us, dig in these challenges & come up with a Desi Design that is beyond the obvious and fills in the existing gaps.

Get a chance to win Apple Ipad for the winning entry.

This year we have 2 competitions:

1. Design Challenge (Individual or Team of 2)
2. Poster Design (Individual Entry)

1. Design Challenge

The Brief

“It is impossible not to be astonished by India. Nowhere on Earth does humanity present itself in such a dizzying, creative burst of cultures and religions, races and tongues.” -Rough Guide to India

The Indian tradition and culture manifests itself in many forms. One of the most colorful ways is art. And why not! We are talking about India, a country where you witness the unique diversity at every step. Undoubtedly, India is a home to many painting styles and handicrafts inspired by cultures and traditions.

These art forms always have stories to tell, woven around their traditional values, native elements and history. Unfortunately, these art forms are fast fading away, if not lost.

So, how can we as members of the design fraternity, create awareness and preserve these art forms?

How to Approach?

Step 1: Select any form of folk painting, handicraft (toys, weaving, etc.), sculpture making and pottery from any region in India.

Step 2: Select one area of your interest from below.

1: Building the Artisan Community: Traditional Artists remain undiscovered and often leave their trade for more sustainable careers. Design a solution to support and bring to light the community of the selected art form.

2: Creating Awareness: Even with the vast expanse of internet, the rich art forms are yet to penetrate within the society and mostly remain unnoticed. Find a design solution which can help create awareness about the art form among people.

3: Making: Find creative ways to understand the process of making the art form. In the process, you may also design solutions for teaching the art form.

4: Experiencing art forms: Create tangible or digital experiences around the art form. It could manifest as tangible installations, exhibitions or other digital experiences.

For e.g: First select an art form e.g Madhubani, secondly select an area mentioned (Building the artisan Community,Creating Awareness, Making, Experiencing art form) and create digital design solution for that.
